Occultist: Easily the most powerful class in the entire game, they've got everything, strong sustain, decent damage, CC, pets (raven has a heal/stun/lightning damage buff, demon dog is a decent tank)
My favorite build with occultist consists of focusing initially on Dreegs Eye (don't get the passive ability that increases damage and cooldown, it's better to spam it, trust me), then using the points you get from purifying altars to spec into the god, Eye. Tie the eye's special ability with Dreeg's Eye for twice the eyes. Early on, the best sustain comes from your Raven's Mend Flesh, but later on Sigil of Consumption can really FUCK SHIT UP (hint: putting points in the sigil itself doesn't raise the damage by much, instead, later on in the path Destruction gives it a ton of damage, which in turn gives you better health drain). Bloody Pox is absolute shit until you pour a ton of points into it, but after putting a bunch of points in it is a great boss killer. Curse of Fraility lets you kite even the fastest of mobs, while also dropping their defenses significantly.
Occultist has a ton of one point wonders (pets automatically scale with level), aswell as having a large variety of abilities (even an autoattack damage boost, Solael's Witchfire), making it one of the best classes to either major in, or to branch into.
Nightblade: A mix of high damage, high mobility, and one of the better sustain abilities in the game, the only real drawback of the nightblade is the fact all of the abilities require you to be using a melee weapon. That and a lot of damage amp you get is for frost damage, one of the rarer types of damage.
Usually, melee classes are kinda lame in grim dawn, unless you have really fucking high resistances. Nightblade avoids this problem by having a ranged ability that scales pretty well with their autoattack damage (phantasmal blades). Each blade individually does meh damage, but the ability can throw up to 5 blades, and if all 5 hit one target, red mist is achieved. If knife throwing isn't your forte, you can always just spec hard into the autoattack modifiers, and pneumatic burst, so you can kill a bunch of dudes, heal, run away, turn around, rinse repeat.
Shaman: Shaman's damage is pretty good, the only problem is the fact most of their abilities are tied to two handed weapons, and two handed weapons fucking suck. Wendigo totem is batshit insane, massive AoE heals and damage for tiny energy costs. Bramblethorn pet literally never dies, even with only 1 point. Massive AoE stun on a low cooldown with primal strike.
I've heard tell of Shaman/Occultist combos that just AFK with a ton of pets and win the game, but I personally haven't tried it. Something to consider.
Demolitionist: Demolitionist has some of the highest DPS potential in the entire game with dual wielding pistols, especially if you spec hard into the Fire Strike/Flame Touched lines. The only problem with this class is the utter lack of defense skills besides a few situational shields. Whether or not this class can succeed depends entirely on how lucky you get with drops. If you get a lot of movespeed boots and the like, the game becomes trivial. If not, you'll struggle to kite even the slowest of mobs, and fast mobs like boars or jumping spiders will rape your shit.
Haven't played enough of arcanist or soldier to comment.
